A nutritionist who lowered his cholesterol through diet shared 4 simple tips for eating more fiber

When Rob Hobson, a registered nutritionist based in the UK, found out his cholesterol levels were “really high” in June, he decided to manage them through diet, focusing particularly on increasing his fiber intake.

Six months later, when he tested again, his cholesterol levels had improved, and he’d discovered four tricks that make eating more fiber easy.

Cholesterol is a fatty substance the body needs for many bodily processes, but if a person has too much LDL or “bad” cholesterol, it can form sticky plaque in their arteries, putting them at greater risk of cardiovascular disease.

To reduce cholesterol levels, the American Heart Association recommends exercising at least 150 minutes a week, quitting smoking and vaping, maintaining a healthy weight, and eating a heart-healthy diet that’s low in saturated fats and high in fiber. If these measures don’t help, then statins, a medication that lowers LDL cholesterol, will likely be prescribed.

Hobson, the author of “Unprocess Your Life” and “The Low Appetite Cookbook,” already worked out for around an hour each morning, and ate minimal ultra-processed foods and saturated fats. So he zeroed in on fiber.

Eating at least 5 to 10 grams of soluble fiber a day can help lower total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, according to the National Lipid Association. Quinoa, oats, avocado, sweet potatoes, carrots, and chia or flax seeds are good examples.

Here are Hobson’s tips for seamlessly adding more fiber to your diet.

Eat breakfast

Hobson is a big advocate of breakfast because it lends itself to high-fiber foods such as oats, nuts, and seeds. “It’s really easy to get plenty of fiber in at that time of day,” he told Business Insider.

He has two go-to breakfasts that he eats on repeat. The first is a Greek yogurt bowl with berries, oats, and chia seeds. The second is overnight oats, which he makes with milk, protein powder, berries, honey, nuts, and seeds.

Fiber cupboard

A cupboard with shelves of seeds, beans, nuts, and pulses.

Rob Hobson’s fiber cupboard.

Rob Hobson

Hobson created a “fiber cupboard” in his kitchen that’s packed with fibrous foods. He challenges himself to include something from the cupboard in every meal. “Then at least you know that you are making the effort to do it,” he said.

He stocks up on lentils, beans, pulses, wholegrain pasta, brown rice, as well as snacks like fruit and nut bars, rye crackers that he likes to pair with some cottage cheese, and seaweed thins.

“I’m always rooting around for stuff, and I just think having it all in one place is so much easier,” he said.

Add pulses and legumes to your meal and put the rest into a Tupperware in the fridge

The easiest way to add fiber to a meal is to pour half a can of beans or pulses into it, Hobson said. Just one cup of black beans, for example, contains 15 grams of fiber. “You can add them to anything,” he said.

Mix some into a soup, sauce, or curry, or simply sprinkle a couple of tablespoons on top of a salad.

If you’re not using the whole can, decant the rest into a Tupperware and place it in the fridge, Hobson said. That way, they’ll stay fresher for longer and be easily accessible. “Then you don’t have to worry about, ‘I’m going to waste the rest of the tin,'” he said.

Keep the food you want to eat visible

Hobson recommends keeping the foods you want to eat in a visible spot. That way, you’re more likely to reach for them. “Nuts and seeds, always keep them on the side so they’re there,” he said.

Research suggests that the foods you keep on your countertop could impact your body weight, a factor that can influence cholesterol levels. In a 2015 study published in Sage Journals, researchers at Cornell University analyzed the visible foods on 210 countertops in New York and measured their owners’ BMIs. They found that those who had just fresh fruit visible weighed an average of 20 pounds less than those who had unhealthier snacks like candy, soda, and cereals on show.

“It’s your basic See-Food Diet — you eat what you see,” Brian Wansink, the study’s lead author, said of the findings.

But if you’re not ready to make changes to your kitchen layout, Hobson said to stick to one basic principle: “Make sure that you’ve got a bit of fiber on your plate every day with every meal,” he said.

Critical Role’s chief creative officer, Matt Mercer, explains how he avoids burnout

Critical Role’s chief creative officer, Matthew Mercer, had been spearheading his eight-member crew’s relentless push into the big leagues of nerdworld for 10 years.

That was until this July, when he announced that he’d be giving up control of one of the crew’s biggest priorities, their long-running “Dungeons & Dragons” Twitch livestream.

In an August appearance on the podcast “Crispy’s Tavern: Tales and Tea,” Mercer said he’d felt the threat of burnout and thought he needed a break. He said he’d started to feel a “continuous need to produce creatively,” which was “a very draining and very scary thing.”

To be sure, Mercer and his seven cofounders still have a full slate of projects to work on. That includes an ongoing sold-out arena tour, as well as two Amazon-backed animated series on Prime Video. Mercer also has a key role in the team’s game publishing arm, Darrington Press, home to “Daggerheart,” their flagship game and their answer to “D&D.”

Still, Mercer says, it’s important to be able to admit when you’re done, and to give yourself permission to step away from the work for as long as you need to.

“My biggest advice for burnout is to acknowledge when you’re at the edge and take every opportunity you can to step away and replenish your cup,” Mercer told Business Insider.

Brennan Lee Mulligan of “Dimension 20” fame, Mercer’s longtime friend and collaborator, is the game master for Campaign Four, the team’s ongoing “D&D” stream. Mulligan taking over the main stream means Mercer is no longer solely in charge of captaining the team’s regular episodes, which often run to the four-hour mark.

“There’s this concept, the idea that just pushing through and sometimes necessity requires you to do that to a certain point,” Mercer said.

“But I find walking away and taking some time to enrich your creative input means that whatever time you lost beating your head against the wall will be more than made up for when you can return from a place of genuine inspiration and renewal,” Mercer added.

Campaign Four airs on Beacon, Critical Role’s in-house streaming platform, as well as on Twitch and YouTube.

Im-a-personal-trainer-and-mom-of-4-Here-are.jpeg

I’m a personal trainer and mom of 4. Here are my 10 go-to meals and snacks to make in an air fryer.

  • I’m a personal trainer and mom of four, and I love using my air fryer to make meals and snacks.
  • Homemade tortilla chips and stuffed peppers are some of my favorite things to make in an air fryer.
  • I also use my air fryer to make baked apples, breakfast bowls, and kale chips.

My health-centered, active family focuses on nutrient-dense foods that provide us with energy.

We don’t shy away from less nutritious foods (everything in moderation), but most of our meals are centered on lean protein, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy, and healthy fats.

On top of that, I also face the ever-pressing need to appease all four of my kids. Making nutritious foods that appeal to everyone’s palate can be challenging, but using an air fryer helps.

I love that air fryers help create that crunchy, fried appeal without adding a ton of fat to a dish. Though fats can be nutritious, they are better consumed in proportion to the carbs and protein in your meal.

Plus, my air fryer doubles as another cooking tool when the stove or oven is in use, and my kids can use it to make food on their own without having to navigate burners and dials.

Here are some of my favorite air-fryer meals and snacks.

Ham-and-egg cups are an easy breakfast.

I make these breakfast bites in silicone cups.

Rachel MacPherson

Breakfast cups are nothing new in our house, but they require less time and effort to make because of the air fryer.

Plus, we can make them in small batches to suit each person’s tastes — and my kids have no problem creating their personalized mini egg cups.

The number of cups you can make at once may depend on the basket size of your air fryer. Usually, I can make eight at a time using silicone baking cups.

The ham-and-egg cups take about 15 minutes to make.

ham cheese in silicone wrapper in air fryer

You can easily customize the ham-and-egg cups.

Rachel MacPherson

Preheat your air fryer to 300°F.

Line each baking cup with a slice of ham or prosciutto for a fancier option. Mix eggs with salt, pepper, and any additional seasonings of your choice, such as Worcestershire sauce and red-pepper flakes.

Carefully place the ham-lined cups into the air fryer and pour the egg mixture into each. Add any veggies you prefer, such as chopped asparagus or cooked spinach. Sprinkle on a cheese of your choice.

Let the egg cups cook for about 15 minutes. Serve hot, or let them cool slightly and store in the fridge to reheat later.

I like making breakfast bowls with air-fried veggies.

asparagus and tomatoes on foil in air fryer

You can use any vegetables you have on hand.

Rachel MacPherson

It can be challenging to have a vegetable-packed breakfast, but it’s a great way to better ensure you’ll get enough nutrients throughout your day.

With the air fryer, I can easily cook fresh produce in the morning. I like to use asparagus and tomatoes, pairing them with eggs that I’ve poached or “boiled” in the air fryer.

This produce-filled breakfast takes about 12 minutes to make and pairs well with toast.

asparagus tomato egg breakfast bowl

I like to use toast to sop up any juices.

Rachel MacPherson

Line your air fryer with foil and preheat it to 300°F.

Clean and snap asparagus, chopping it into bite-sized pieces. Add cherry or grape tomatoes to a bowl with asparagus, spritz with olive oil, and season with salt and pepper.

Place the produce in the preheated air fryer for 10 to 12 minutes. If you prefer crunchy asparagus, leave it out until the last four to six minutes, and then place it on top of the tomatoes to finish cooking.

Serve with eggs and some toast for mopping up all the yummy juices.

I make chicken Parmesan without frying my cutlets in a ton of oil.

breaded chicken breasts on a piece of parchment paper

I bread my chicken (not pictured) before I cook it.

Candice Bell/Shutterstock

Chicken Parmesan is one of my favorite comfort foods, and the air fryer helps me make it without having to pan-fry my protein in oil.

For two 8-ounce chicken breasts, you’ll need about ¼ cup of Parmesan cheese and 1 cup of breadcrumbs. You’ll also need two eggs, marinara sauce, and mozzarella for topping.

Air-fryer chicken Parmesan pairs well with pasta.

homemade chicken parmesan

My chicken Parmesan is usually served with pasta.

Nancy Salmon/Shutterstock

First, pound the chicken breasts until they are a uniform thickness, about 1/2 inch. Then set your air fryer to 360°F.

Combine the Parmesan and breadcrumbs in one dish and add any desired seasonings, such as garlic powder, salt, pepper, oregano, and red-pepper flakes. Whisk your eggs in a separate bowl. Coat each piece of chicken in egg, then in the crumb mixture.

Place the breasts in the preheated air fryer and cook for six minutes. Flip and top with marinara sauce and mozzarella. Cook an additional four minutes or so until the internal temperature of the chicken reaches 165°F.

We like to serve the cutlets on top of pasta with more marinara sauce.

Seasoned pumpkin seeds are a great snack.

pumpkin seeds with seasoning in bowl

Making your own seasoned nuts and seeds in the air fryer is game-changing.

Rachel MacPherson

We buy a lot of seeds in bulk, so switching up the flavor profile helps turn them into coveted snacks. We especially enjoy using seeds from squash, such as pumpkins, for this recipe.

Cumin, salt, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, and smoked paprika are all excellent choices for seasoning seeds, though you can experiment with other flavors you enjoy.

You can season the seeds to be sweet or savory.

pumpkin seeds in air fryer

Sometimes, I use cumin, garlic powder, and onion powder.

Rachel MacPherson

Toss your seeds with a bit of olive oil and salt. Place them in the air fryer at 320°F, periodically opening the machine to shake the seeds to ensure even cooking.

Cook for about 15 minutes or until the seeds are crispy. Then, toss the seeds in a bowl with a bit of oil and your preferred seasonings.

Baked apples are a favorite of ours, and they’re easily adaptable to most dietary preferences.

apples with cinnamon on them in an air fryer

We use our air fryer for more than just savory foods.

Rachel MacPherson

One of my family’s favorite air-fryer desserts is a fruity crumble that we usually make with apples.

After all, baking fruit is a delicious way to bring out its natural sugars and create a deeply comforting dessert that’s both nutritious and satisfying.

You can make this dessert in under 30 minutes.

baked apple crumble

You can pair the baked apples with whipped cream.

Rachel MacPherson

Simply combine 1 or 2 tablespoons of a fat, such as butter or coconut oil, with the same amount of oats, chopped nuts, and shredded coconut.

Add a sweetener, such as monk fruit, brown sugar, honey, or maple syrup, and some warming spices like cinnamon and nutmeg.

Cut the apples in half and top them with spoonfuls of the mixture you’ve created. Cook them in a preheated air fryer at 350°F for 20 minutes.

Top with vanilla frozen yogurt, ice cream, or whipped cream.

This recipe can also be made with bananas or pears, though you may need to adjust the cooking time accordingly.

Polenta pizzas are an excellent snack, mini meal, or appetizer that can be dressed up or down.

polenta rounds in air fryer

I use polenta rounds as my base for the mini pizzas.

Rachel MacPherson

My kids love the idea of mini pizzas — and if you use fresh mozzarella, basil, and a balsamic reduction, you’ve got a fancy-ish hors d’oeuvre.

For the base, I slice up a tube of precooked polenta. From there, you can use whichever sauces, cheeses, and extra toppings you’d like.

These rounds can be customized with any toppings.

polenta topped with cheese and sauce in air fryer

I often make my own marinara sauce.

Rachel MacPherson

Preheat your air fryer to 400°F, then spritz the basket with olive oil.

Create 1-inch-thick polenta slices, and place them in the air fryer, topping them with another spritz of oil.

Sprinkle with salt and pepper. After five minutes, top the polenta with marinara sauce and your choice of cheese, as well as any other cooked toppings you desire.

Cook for another five minutes, then plate with fresh basil and balsamic glaze, if desired.

Pro tip: You can make a quick marinara using tomato sauce, a splash of balsamic and/or Worcestershire sauce, oregano, basil, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Heat this in the microwave (lightly covered) to blend the flavors.

I make my own tortilla chips in the air fryer.

tortilla slices in air fryer

You can use corn tortillas to make chips.

Rachel MacPherson

We make a lot of tacos with corn tortillas, but they go stale quickly. To avoid food waste while creating a tasty snack, we turn them into chips in our air fryer.

The chips can be ready in under 10 minutes.

tortilla chips homemade

I use a strainer to cool chips so they don’t get soggy.

Rachel MacPherson

Preheat your air fryer to 350°F. Cut small corn tortillas into quarters, spray with olive oil, and season with salt.

Place your pieces in the air-fryer basket, ensuring they’re not overlapping. Cook in batches for five to seven minutes at a time, flipping each chip halfway through.

Use a strainer to cool your batches of chips so they don’t get soggy.

I use leftover produce to make a rich air-fryer salsa.

salsa ingredients in air fryer

“Roasting” the vegetables adds flavor.

Rachel MacPherson

Fresh salsa is incredible, but roasted salsa is an easy way of using up bits and pieces to create a deep, rich dip for your air-fried tortilla chips.

The best part is you can adjust the heat, garlic, and seasonings to your preferences.

To make the salsa, I use an air fryer and a food processor.

salsa in bowl

I usually add cumin and cayenne pepper to my salsa.

Rachel MacPherson

Preheat your air fryer to 400°F.

Add garlic cloves, hot peppers of choice, tomatoes, and onion to the preheated air-fryer basket and spritz with olive oil. Sprinkle with salt.

You may want to remove the stems and seeds from your peppers before cooking them. Leave garlic cloves in their skin, as they will roast and become deliciously mushy and caramelized.

Cook everything for about 15 minutes, or until your veggies look slightly charred. Then, pulse your ingredients in a food processor to your desired chunkiness.

Add cilantro and fresh lime juice, then season with salt and pepper to taste. Cumin and cayenne pepper make excellent additions.

For a protein-packed dish, I stuff peppers with tuna salad.

tuna stuffed peppers with shredded cheese in air fryer

I can usually fit two whole peppers in my air fryer.

Rachel MacPherson

Tuna salad is the star of many protein-packed dishes in our house. It’s quick and requires no thawing or cooking.

However, sandwiches can become boring after a while. When we crave something warm, we stuff tuna into bell peppers.

You can also easily customize these stuffed peppers.

tuna stuffed peppers

You can customize this recipe however you want.

Rachel MacPherson

Preheat your air fryer to 360°F.

Cut your bell pepper in half and remove the seeds. Then, top each pepper slice with your favorite tuna salad — we make ours with mayo, Greek yogurt, green onions, diced pickles, and hot peppers.

Cook for 10 minutes, and then sprinkle with mozzarella or your favorite cheese. Cook for another two or three minutes until the cheese melts and bubbles.

Lastly, we love to snack on air-fried kale chips.

cooked kale in air fryer

You can season kale chips however you want.

Rachel MacPherson

This is another crunchy and quick savory snack that provides a ton of nutrients in a snap.

Strip the leaves off the stems from a bunch of kale and rip them into pieces. Place them in a bowl and spritz with olive oil, then sprinkle with sea salt.

Massage the kale until it turns softer and becomes a brighter green. Place in the air fryer preheated to 370°F and cook for about five minutes.

Remove the leaves when they appear crispy and have a slight color. Season the kale chips as desired. We use garlic powder, salt, and pepper.

What it’s like visiting the island of St. Barts — a beloved party spot for billionaires and their superyachts

  • St. Barts, also known as St. Barthelemy, is a Caribbean island where billionaires often vacation.
  • The destination offers stunning beaches, luxury shopping, historic sites, and more.
  • A yacht belonging to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos was spotted there at the start of 2026.

Where is Amazon founder Jeff Bezos kicking off the new year?

If the location of his $500 million yacht Koru is any indication, the answer is St. Barthelemy, or St Barts for short.

The French-speaking Caribbean island is a luxurious hot spot for billionaires, where visitors can relax on beautiful beaches, shop designer brands, and, naturally, enjoy some privacy.

Of course, many of us are waking up today at home, not on an island. But if you’re curious, here’s what it’s like to visit the destination.

St. Bart’s is an island off Saint Martin in the Lesser Antilles.

Located in the French West Indies, the small island runs about 11 miles long and 2.5 miles wide.

It’s typically warm and sunny most of the year, with temperatures often in the 70s, 80s, or low 90s, and peak tourist season starts in late fall and lasts through the spring.

As a French territory, the official language of St. Barts is French, though English is also widely spoken.

It’s got rich beaches and a French flair.

The exclusive-feeling island is home to more than a dozen beaches, where visitors can soak up the sun on smooth, sandy shores and in crystal-clear water.

“I always say if you want to have your toes in the sand and eat a croissant that feels like you’re in Paris, St. Barts is the place for you,” Elisabeth Brown, the membership director at the luxury concierge service Knightsbridge Circle, told Business Insider’s Madeline Berg.

Surrounded by shallow coral reefs, St. Barts has some top-tier snorkeling spots, such as Grand Cul-de-Sac — home to sea turtles and a range of tropical fish.

Local natural sights also include mountains and hills formed from volcanic eruptions. That said, there are no active volcanoes on St. Barts.

Billionaires like Jeff Bezos seem to love St. Barts.

Jeff Bezos and his wife, Lauren Sánchez Bezos, were photographed in St. Barts this week — and the Amazon founder has been spotted in St. Barts on multiple occasions over the years.

No matter the time of year, though, the island regularly welcomes the wealthy.

Celebrities like Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian, and Leonardo DiCaprio have visited in the past, and influential banking families, like the Rothschilds, have famously purchased property there.

The influx of .001% travelers means yachts are everywhere.

In addition to Bezos’ vessel, massive yachts owned by Playrix founder Dmitry Bukhman, Dallas Mavericks owner Miriam Adelson, and entertainment mogul David Geffen also parked in St. Barts during the recent holiday.

While the yachts are primarily used for transportation to the island, they’re also attractions in and of themselves, featuring amenities such as jacuzzis and movie theaters.

Travelers without private yachts can still reach the island by flying into an airport on a larger Caribbean island, like San Juan. From there, they could take a ferry or private boat to St Barts.

Hotels can get pricey, but they’re quite luxurious.

Visitors have several options for accommodations, ranging from villa rentals starting at over $900 a night to luxurious hotels for an even higher price.

The Eden Rock hotel is just one example. It overlooks St. Jean Bay — home to one of the most popular beaches on St. Barts — and is home to fine-dining restaurants and holistic spas.

During holiday seasons like New Year’s, a single-night stay at its largest villa can cost upward of €13,000, or about $15,200.

There’s also the Rosewood Le Guanahani resort, located on a private peninsula that’s home to two secluded beaches, giving travelers the ultimate getaway far from crowds.

Such privacy comes at a price, as even its most basic room can run guests thousands of dollars a night.

Even shopping is elevated on the island.

With billionaire travelers always on-site, the island’s retail scene largely caters to shoppers who can drop thousands at any given moment.

Some of the designer brands that have boutiques on St. Barts include Hermès, Cartier, Dior, and Louis Vuitton.

The island’s also home to luxury retailers like Patek Phillipe, which sells one-of-a-kind timepieces you can’t find anywhere else. Some retail for five, six, and even seven figures.

There’s even a club scene for those who want to party until morning.

A trip to St. Barts isn’t all about relaxation, though. There are plenty of places to party and experience live music.

One of the most popular spots for this on the island is Nikki Beach, an upscale restaurant and beach club. In past years, big-name musicians like Kygo and Mariah Carey have even performed at its New Year’s Eve celebrations.

It’s also a go-to for people looking to relax poolside with a drink in hand — though keep in mind that even just renting a lounge chair may cost you over $100.

Trump’s sweeping student-loan repayment overhaul goes into effect in the new year. Here’s what’s changing.

The new year is bringing a host of new changes for millions of student-loan borrowers.

Beginning in July 2026, the student-loan provisions signed into law in President Donald Trump’s “big beautiful” spending legislation are set to begin taking effect. Those provisions include rolling out new student-loan repayment plans, new borrowing caps, and eliminating existing income-driven repayment plans, which could result in higher monthly payments for borrowers.

Here’s what the Trump administration has in store for student-loan repayment in 2026.

New student-loan repayment plans

Beginning in July, the Department of Education plans to begin its process of eliminating existing income-driven repayment plans and replacing them with two options: a standard repayment plan and a new Repayment Assistance Plan.

The standard repayment plan would set fixed payments for borrowers over a 10 to 25-year period based on the borrower’s original balance. The Repayment Assistance Plan would serve as the income-based option for borrowers; it would set payments at 1% to 10% of the borrower’s income, with a minimum monthly payment of $10 and forgiveness after 30 years.

It’s less generous than the existing income-based repayment plan, which forgives balances after 20 or 25 years, and former President Joe Biden’s SAVE plan, which would forgive balances after as few as 10 years of payments.

Borrowers who took out loans before July 1, 2026, will have until 2028 to enroll in RAP before the other plans phase out. Borrowers who take out loans after July 1, 2026, will only have RAP and the standard repayment plan as available repayment options.

Borrowing caps for advanced degrees

In addition to new repayment plans, Trump’s spending legislation eliminated the Grad PLUS program, which allowed graduate and professional students to borrow up to the full cost of attendance for their programs.

It also implemented new borrowing caps for borrowers seeking advanced degrees. Graduate students would have a cap of $20,500 a year or $100,000 over a lifetime, and professional students would have a cap of $50,000 a year and $200,000 over a lifetime.

The Department of Education also proposed instituting a revised definition of a “professional” program, which included 10 programs that would qualify for the higher borrowing cap, including medicine, law, and dentistry. The new definition was a key point of contention with stakeholders who negotiated the terms with the department because the revised definition leaves out advanced programs like nursing, some of which have tuition that is above the proposed caps.

Eliminating the SAVE plan

Trump’s spending legislation included eliminating the SAVE plan as part of its phase-out of existing income-driven repayment plans by 2028. However, his administration announced a proposed settlement with the state of Missouri in December that would end the SAVE plan as soon as the court approves the settlement.

It means that the 7 million borrowers enrolled in SAVE would have a limited period of time to find a new repayment plan and restart their monthly payments at a higher amount. Additionally, the department said that it would deny pending applications to SAVE, which would include 450,000 borrowers who have expressed interest in enrolling in the plan.

Expanding eligibility for income-based repayment

The Department of Education is expanding eligibility for income-based repayment plans by removing the requirement of partial financial hardship. Prior to Trump’s spending legislation, borrowers seeking to enroll in an IBR plan were required to have a monthly payment based on their income that was less than the amount needed to pay off their full balance over 10 years.

Removing that requirement, which the department said would be completed in December 2025, means that borrowers with higher incomes would be eligible to enroll in IBR. Additionally, the department said that servicers would hold IBR applications that would otherwise be denied, and the applications would be processed once the updates to IBR were completed.

Sprinkles Cupcakes is closing immediately, says the founder

Sprinkles Cupcakes is closing, cofounder Candace Nelson said on Wednesday.

Nelson started the American cupcake brand in 2005 with her husband. The couple sold it to private-equity firm KarpReilly in 2012.

“This isn’t how I thought the story would go. I thought Sprinkles would keep growing and be around forever. I thought it was going to be my legacy,” Nelson said in a video on Wednesday.

Nelson said the company’s locations were closing on Wednesday: “Just to say that out loud is completely surreal.”

The company had 21 stores in seven states, according to its site, which did not indicate any closures. Sprinkles pioneered the “cupcake ATM” in 2012, selling cupcakes through a machine. The company had 25 such dispensaries in airports, malls, and other locations.

The company has over 1,000 employees, according to Nelson’s LinkedIn profile.

After Nelson sold Sprinkles, she went on to cofound pizza company Pizzana and CN2 Ventures, a family office that invests in startups. In 2022, she wrote a book for entrepreneurs about turning business ideas into profitable companies, based on her experience with Sprinkles.

On LinkedIn, Nelson said she had “no ownership or operational involvement” with Sprinkles.

Neither Sprinkles nor its private-equity owner, KarpReilly, responded to Business Insider’s requests for comment.

It’s unclear if KarpReilly sold the business or is winding it down. The firm removed Sprinkles from its online holdings list in the fourth quarter, according to an archived version of its website.

Connecticut-based KarpReilly’s food and beverage investments include Wilde Chips, the ice cream company Salt and Straw, and the fast-food chicken company Starbird.

Sprinkles was one of the last holdouts of the 2000s cupcake boom, along with Georgetown Cupcakes, which has two physical locations.

A few have rebooted, including Crumbs, which closed in 2016 after expanding aggressively as a public company. The husband-and-wife cofounders, who sold half their stake in 2008, bought the rights to Crumbs in 2022 and made it a delivery-only business.
