How an international UNC student landed an AI summer internship after changing her major

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Vivienne Hnin, a junior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill who will be interning at AI-native startup Utilyst this summer. Her employment and identity have been verified by Business Insider. The following has been edited for length and clarity.

I came to Chapel Hill in 2023 as an international student enrolled in pre-med.

My country, Burma, was on the travel ban list last year, so I couldn’t go home and had to find a summer job. As a biology major, I didn’t have a lot of options for summer internships. That made me reevaluate my major because I felt medical school might be difficult as an international student with all the policy changes.

So, I started exploring other options. Part of the reason I decided to pivot into computer science is because of AI. In the past, people who went into computer science had been coding since they were very young. They knew the fundamentals coming in.

I didn’t have robotics or computer science classes growing up. With AI, you can learn at a much faster pace. UNC was also really accommodating and helped me switch majors and explore my interests without locking me into a major that I chose freshman year.

It was hard to adapt and get an internship this cycle because I started late, so I tried a bunch of tactics. Here’s what worked:

1. I started building projects and posting about them.

Over winter break, I pivoted and started building projects with AI.

These are essentially assignments you make yourself. A lot of juniors, especially those without internships secured, have personal projects. I learned that it’s important to have a good front-end that’s accessible because recruiters who review these projects aren’t always technical.

I made videos and posted about them on LinkedIn. That garnered some traction. Some recent alumna also started reaching out to me about coffee chats.

I decided to cater all of my projects toward one or more major coding languages so hiring managers would see that I was proficient in all the major coding languages. I also launched the projects, which showed that I was able to make it a full-stack project.

2. I attended hackathons.

I started going to hackathons because they were a great way to learn new technologies and work with people.

I also practiced a lot of technical concepts through self-studying.

3. I networked a lot.

I got LinkedIn Premium for a month and started cold DMing people. I had a lot of LinkedIn connections, and a lot of important people were either my first or my second connections at the time, so I was able to message them. I think it’s really important to keep upping your connection count on LinkedIn. If you’re a student looking for a job, I recommend getting Premium for a month.

I searched for founders from UNC. I got ignored a lot, as one would expect when they beg for an internship in a LinkedIn DM. However, I received responses from two alumni, and both led to offers.

One of the professors I reached out to actually got me an AI engineering internship at Utilyst, which I’ll be working at this summer and fall.

4. I used Handshake and career fairs.

There are a lot of scam job postings. I found Handshake more reliable because it’s affiliated with schools. Career fairs are also great because if you can convince the recruiter that you’re worth their time, you may be able to skip the line and get an interview.

5. I didn’t listen to the noise.

One thing that computer science and pre-med majors have in common is that they want to be the one person crossing the finish line. There’s a lot of sabotage, and people are very business-minded.

When you go on Reddit, you’re going to see a lot of bad advice. For example, I was told to focus only on my grades, and that personal projects are useless because people can now build with AI, so they won’t help you stand out.

I have never been asked about my GPA, transcript, or even my courses. I have been asked primarily about my projects. Also, most of the interviews I’ve done actually accommodate the use of AI. Whether it’s in real life or online, sometimes the advice is not accurate.

People also make the industry seem more competitive than it is. Part of my decision to enter CS was out of spite. I was talking with one of my fellow international students who’s a CS major, and he told me I switched too late and I wouldn’t be able to get an internship. That made me want to start applying.

Entry-level engineering jobs are already changing. Here’s how they can get ahead.

If Ben Zabihi had started his career five years ago, his workday would have looked very different than it does today.

A few years ago, he might have spent much of his time formatting code and writing documentation. Now Zabihi, who has been working as a software engineer at a small New York City startup since December, said a good portion of his day is spent using AI tools — not just to write code, but also as a research assistant to better understand his industry and business terminology.

The 23-year-old entered the profession at a time when companies and workers are actively testing and debating the extent to which AI is helpful and what still requires a human touch.

Though Zabihi said that relying too much on AI at the start of his career could result in a weaker foundation for his learning in the long term, he also knows he has to use the technology and optimize his workflow.

The tasks that used to keep entry-level engineers busy might not be as important as they once were, he said.

Instead, he’s focusing on the bigger picture: work like understanding business goals, system architecture, scaling, and security risks, which once were the domain of more senior engineers.

Risk and opportunity

While many recent grads see AI as a way to gain superpowers quickly, some industry veterans worry that the technology erodes a formative stage of learning that builds judgment and problem-solving skills — a gap that may only become clear as today’s engineers advance.

When 36-year-old engineer Georgian Tutuianu entered the field a few years ago, he said 95% of the job was painful. For today’s junior engineers, though, there are many shortcuts — and he’s worried those can come at the expense of deeper understanding.

For example, a core part of his job is managing codebases through pull requests, where engineers submit code for review before it’s merged into the system. Tutuianu said he used to review around 100 to 500 lines of code in a pull request. Now, with LLMs, it’s easily over a thousand, and he said he sees workers often add layers of complexity they don’t understand.

“It’s super concerning because then you have just a pile of terribleness that you have to contend with,” Tutuianu said. “It’s literally just pollution.”

He said he worries that junior engineers may be outsourcing the hardest part of the job — wrestling with what they don’t understand — to LLMs.

Zabihi and Tutuianu’s differing experiences reflect a wider shift in the industry. As one of the fastest sectors to adopt AI, software engineering is being transformed — and entry-level roles, which were once the training grounds for mastering the complexities of the job, are fundamentally changing.

With that comes risk, but also opportunity.

Getting ahead

There’s no crystal ball to predict where the industry is headed, but one thing is clear: Junior developers are navigating a murky employment market as the industry undergoes a tectonic shift. That means they’ll need to move quickly to stay relevant.

The shift in focus may also force a rethinking of the fundamentals of the job. If AI can handle much of the code itself, the value of an engineer might lie less in perfecting syntax and more in gaining a broader expertise in defining problems and architecting solutions.

“The question then is, how do the requirements of the job and the skills change?” Matt Kropp, managing director and senior partner and chief AI officer of BCG X, the tech division of Boston Consulting Group, told Business Insider. “If you’re a junior engineer, how do you make sure that you meet those skills in the market?

Keith Ballinger, Google’s vice president and general manager of Developer & Experiences, told Business Insider that “nothing beats doing it.”

“You don’t need to ask for anybody’s permission to do something significant and meaningful,” Ballinger said. “Just put together a cool app and post it on a website.”

Ballinger said that most software engineers didn’t enter the field to write code in a specific language or framework. A developer’s job is to use technology to solve problems and apply engineering techniques, he said. Great engineers have always known how to break down problems into smaller ones, and now agents can help handle the rest, Ballinger said.

“That’s a skill that we can teach and that people can pick up, but now it’s more important than ever, and certainly more important than memorizing how an API works,” Ballinger said.

As entry-level hiring opportunities shift, Mohit Bhende, the CEO and cofounder of engineering hiring platform Karat, said aspiring engineers should seek out organizations committed to training junior talent. Those opportunities may increasingly lie outside traditional tech, he said.

Bhende said he expects more talent to move to sectors like finance and healthcare, where AI adoption is slower, and security concerns elevate the value of human oversight.

He said CTOs are also increasingly seeking engineers who understand the business side of their work. Bhende said that aspiring engineers should prioritize developing domain knowledge, whether through on-the-job training or formal education.

“Maybe you’re graduating not just with the computer science degree, but you’re graduating with that, plus a business degree,” Bhende said, adding that he thinks “the jobs of the future are going to merge those two.”

Zabihi, for one, is bullish about what the rapidly evolving tech will mean for his career. He said his output is significantly higher because of AI — and ultimately, that’s what he’s being paid for.

“As a junior dev, you’ve never gotten a better bang for your buck,” Zabihi said.

A Google engineer whose job is changing due to AI explains how she’s learning without burning out

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Pratiksha Patnaik, a 30-year-old cloud infrastructure engineer at Google Cloud Consulting, based in Seattle. Her identity and employment have been verified by Business Insider. The following has been edited for length and clarity.

I’ve been with Google for around three years and I started as an infrastructure engineer. I’m still an infrastructure engineer and on a day-to-day basis, I work with customers to build different solutions, depending on the needs of the customer.

At first, I was mostly involved with networking security and infrastructure customers. But as we saw the AI wave come in, we started focusing more on customers that want to adopt gen AI products and solutions.

I didn’t transition into an AI role, but I’m working with a lot of AI services, and AI engineers who are working on features for those services. My job is a combination of working with customers and the product team, to provide technical solutions for customers. It’s a constant feedback loop to figure out if the solution we’re building is right for the customer we’re working for.

Our job is to know how these products work. Sometimes when we work on the products, we identify feature gaps or bugs, so we need to work with the product team or engineering team.

I’ve been in the same role the whole time, but the nature of my job is changing because of everything going on in the AI space. We get a lot of demand in AI products and we have to do a lot of trainings on it to deliver.

I spend an hour or two weekly on trainings

The more AI progresses, the more difficult it’s become to keep up. As the rate of AI innovation gets quicker, the role of engineers has transitioned from mastery to continuous adaptation at scale.

Just being aware of everything that’s happening in the tech industry, along with what we have to do with the customer, has changed dramatically from what it was like a year ago. Back then, we had to execute within known constraints. But as time passes and AI evolves rapidly, those perimeters have dissolved and we have to invest much more time to learning about changes in this space. We now have to navigate an ever-expanding problem space alongside our customers.

I spend around one to two hours a week up-skilling on new concepts. We have a lot of internal trainings that we can utilize. So I see if there is something new that I’m interested in learning about and that can help me do my job.

I am gaining a deeper level of understanding in high-performance computing, AI observability, model performance benchmarking, and the underlying architecture of GPUs and TPUs.

It can get overwhelming

The culture at Google is very much about constantly learning. Every day we learn about a new tool or model version. That motivates me to keep learning. We also have to skill up in order to put our best foot forward in front of the customers.

But with the pace of technology nowadays, I feel like I need to know everything — and if I don’t learn, I might be left behind.

The reality is that it’s not practically possible to know everything with the changes that are coming out at an exponential rate. To remain effective without burning out, I prioritize intentional depth over exhaustive consumption. By focusing on what really interests me, I can make sure that my learning is not just a chore of “keeping up,” but an investment in expertise.

When I read too much, I get overwhelmed and it’s not possible to retain all of the information I’m consuming. We’re at a point where the amount of information we have is huge and we have to figure out where to spend our time and what’s the most beneficial for us.

I thought downsizing would be hard for our family of 4. It ended up changing our lives for the better.

In July 2025, my husband, Zach, and I moved our family of four from the suburbs of Ft Worth, Texas, to Denver.

After nearly 10 years of marriage, two kids, and three work-related moves, it was finally time to settle in a place of our choosing. This time, we didn’t just want a change of scenery; we wanted a change of lifestyle.

But finding a house in the bustling city neighborhood of our dreams within our budget meant downsizing — drastically.

Moving from our 3,300-square-foot home to a 2,300-square-foot bungalow with 1,200 square feet of actual living space (the rest being unfinished basement) wasn’t easy. It meant swapping our large kitchen island for a small dining table. It meant no more master bath soaking tub, my refuge from life’s stresses on more occasions than I could count. And it meant my kids giving up their separate rooms to share one.

But what we’ve gained in the quality and quantity of time spent together is worth every bit of lost square footage.

We’re spending our time on what matters

Our bigger house in Texas required more upkeep, and we were more than happy to give that up for extra free time on the weekends. Now, we spend our time visiting attractions such as the Denver Zoo and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. We’re fostering our kids’ curiosity, exploring new places together. Our everyday life feels more special and meaningful because these shared experiences amplify our family connection.

We’re also getting out in nature more. Aside from weekend hiking and skiing adventures, our days revolve around outdoor living. We walk everywhere we can, including restaurants, parks, and even Trader Joe’s, which is beneficial because driving to Trader Joe’s means parking at Trader Joe’s, and nobody enjoys that. Our moods are lighter, and our stresses are reduced.

The first time we walked to a restaurant instead of driving, it felt like we were on vacation. Our lives had always been car-dependent, but that’s no longer the case. The kids laughed and raced each other down the sidewalk. We marvelled at the mature trees and brightly colored flowers lining 7th Avenue Parkway. There was no timeline or rushing, just the joy of being present. When we made our way home after an alfresco dinner at Postino, I asked my son if he liked walking to dinner. He asked simply, “Can we do this every day?”

We’re finding connections in our community

Zach and I frequently sit on our front porch while our boys play with neighborhood kids, a first for us. Having houses so close together makes it easier to meet people and form real connections. We know almost every household on our block, and we regularly visit with our closest neighbors. We even enjoyed our first block party in August, which fell on my eldest’s birthday, and according to him, it was his “Best birthday ever!”

Our boys run between yards while we chat with new friends. They are experiencing a childhood closer to the one we grew up with. They’re building confidence and finding their place, and that’s translating to more smiles and fewer tantrums. Zach and I are finding our village, and parenthood feels less solitary.

On a recent trip back to Texas for Thanksgiving, I texted our next-door neighbor to let her know we’d be out of town. Without even asking, she offered to take in our mail. It may be a small gesture, but that sense of community is priceless to us.

My boys have more freedom

Downsizing has also allowed our kids to play more independently in an outdoor space that feels safe and protected. We have an unobstructed line of sight to the backyard, and no matter where my husband and I are in the house, we can hear them if they need us. The result has been hours of creative play, building campsites and outdoor kitchens, playing soccer and baseball, and having water balloon fights or Nerf battles.

Most evenings, my kids are in the backyard playing games and getting dirty. When the weather is nice, they run around with their friends down the street. I would never have felt comfortable not knowing every move my kids were making before, but here, where everyone is watching out, and I can wave at my kids down the block to signal when it’s time to come home, less space means more freedom.

Our downsized life isn’t always perfect. Despite all our decluttering efforts, we’re still left with more stuff than we can accommodate. We also struggle with the lack of privacy, and at times, our smaller shared space feels more claustrophobic than cozy. However, downsizing for an urban lifestyle has given us the opportunity to live beyond our four walls, and that’s worth more than any amount of space could ever be.

McKinsey CEO Bob Sternfels says AI is changing how the firm views the perfect job candidate

Landing a job at McKinsey & Company has never been easy. The firm has long been known for recruiting top talent from top schools and leading industry experts.

AI, however, is forcing the firm to rethink the types of applicants it considers in the hiring process, CEO Bob Sternfels said.

On Harvard Business Review’s IdeaCast podcast this week, Sternfels said the firm used AI to analyze its past 20 years of hiring data to understand where it may have overlooked talent for its coveted class of partners.

The firm found that applicants who had setbacks and recovered were more likely to become partners. So, now, Stenfels said, the firm looks for resilience in its interview process.

“It turned out we had some bias in our system,” he said, adding that the firm was too focused on whether candidates had “perfect marks” instead of how they bounced back from difficulties.

In December, the firm promoted about 200 employees to partner — one of the smallest classes in years, The Wall Street Journal reported. In 2022, it promoted about 400 people to partner.

McKinsey partners typically earn under $500,000 in base pay, but they can expect to earn hundreds of thousands more in bonuses and profit sharing.

McKinsey receives about 1 million résumés annually. In 2024, the firm told Business Insider that it planned to hire about 1% of applicants, in line with 2023.

The firm’s spokesperson also said at the time that it looks for “distinctive students just starting their careers” and experts in industries ranging from technology to finance to law.

The company also looks for strong problem-solving skills, which it gauges through a game-based assessment called Solve.

To help candidates prepare, the company offers candidates resources ahead of time.

“This helps to ensure candidates from any background — regardless of whether they have exposure to resources like consulting clubs — can demonstrate their distinctiveness in our process,” the firm told Business Insider.

Trump’s sweeping student-loan repayment overhaul goes into effect in the new year. Here’s what’s changing.

The new year is bringing a host of new changes for millions of student-loan borrowers.

Beginning in July 2026, the student-loan provisions signed into law in President Donald Trump’s “big beautiful” spending legislation are set to begin taking effect. Those provisions include rolling out new student-loan repayment plans, new borrowing caps, and eliminating existing income-driven repayment plans, which could result in higher monthly payments for borrowers.

Here’s what the Trump administration has in store for student-loan repayment in 2026.

New student-loan repayment plans

Beginning in July, the Department of Education plans to begin its process of eliminating existing income-driven repayment plans and replacing them with two options: a standard repayment plan and a new Repayment Assistance Plan.

The standard repayment plan would set fixed payments for borrowers over a 10 to 25-year period based on the borrower’s original balance. The Repayment Assistance Plan would serve as the income-based option for borrowers; it would set payments at 1% to 10% of the borrower’s income, with a minimum monthly payment of $10 and forgiveness after 30 years.

It’s less generous than the existing income-based repayment plan, which forgives balances after 20 or 25 years, and former President Joe Biden’s SAVE plan, which would forgive balances after as few as 10 years of payments.

Borrowers who took out loans before July 1, 2026, will have until 2028 to enroll in RAP before the other plans phase out. Borrowers who take out loans after July 1, 2026, will only have RAP and the standard repayment plan as available repayment options.

Borrowing caps for advanced degrees

In addition to new repayment plans, Trump’s spending legislation eliminated the Grad PLUS program, which allowed graduate and professional students to borrow up to the full cost of attendance for their programs.

It also implemented new borrowing caps for borrowers seeking advanced degrees. Graduate students would have a cap of $20,500 a year or $100,000 over a lifetime, and professional students would have a cap of $50,000 a year and $200,000 over a lifetime.

The Department of Education also proposed instituting a revised definition of a “professional” program, which included 10 programs that would qualify for the higher borrowing cap, including medicine, law, and dentistry. The new definition was a key point of contention with stakeholders who negotiated the terms with the department because the revised definition leaves out advanced programs like nursing, some of which have tuition that is above the proposed caps.

Eliminating the SAVE plan

Trump’s spending legislation included eliminating the SAVE plan as part of its phase-out of existing income-driven repayment plans by 2028. However, his administration announced a proposed settlement with the state of Missouri in December that would end the SAVE plan as soon as the court approves the settlement.

It means that the 7 million borrowers enrolled in SAVE would have a limited period of time to find a new repayment plan and restart their monthly payments at a higher amount. Additionally, the department said that it would deny pending applications to SAVE, which would include 450,000 borrowers who have expressed interest in enrolling in the plan.

Expanding eligibility for income-based repayment

The Department of Education is expanding eligibility for income-based repayment plans by removing the requirement of partial financial hardship. Prior to Trump’s spending legislation, borrowers seeking to enroll in an IBR plan were required to have a monthly payment based on their income that was less than the amount needed to pay off their full balance over 10 years.

Removing that requirement, which the department said would be completed in December 2025, means that borrowers with higher incomes would be eligible to enroll in IBR. Additionally, the department said that servicers would hold IBR applications that would otherwise be denied, and the applications would be processed once the updates to IBR were completed.
