My husband and I dread filing taxes. To help motivate us, we treat ourselves to a date night after we file.

My husband and I took over four hours to file our taxes the first time we filed jointly. We each dreaded the task as single adults, but together it was somehow even more unbearable. Not only is there more paperwork to submit, but the vibe can turn tense — and anything but romantic — when it comes to dealing with our finances.

To mitigate this, we each gather our tax documents in advance. We learned the hard way that getting organized beforehand cuts our time spent sitting at the computer by literal hours. When we each take time to gather what we need to file, it only takes us about an hour to file online.

When we finally hit “submit,” we head to our yearly tradition to celebrate.

We hate doing our taxes, so we came up with a reward system

Having something to look forward to after filing really helps us focus on just getting it done with minimal anxiety.

The first few times we did our taxes this way, the reward was takeout from one of our favorite places and a movie night in with “Gilmore Girls”- level treats.

This is not only our ideal date night, but it’s also nostalgic as we started dating during the pandemic. All of our first dates involved a nice takeout dinner or a movie night at one of our places, so our tax reward dates remind us of those times.

This year looked a bit different

I am no longer working full-time due to health issues this year, and so our joint income has been slashed in half. Couple that with the rising cost of nearly everything, and things have gotten tight for us.

We’ve had to reexamine our budget periodically and cut costs where we can. We’ve saved the most money by hardly ever eating out.

That’s why I wanted our reward to look a bit different this year. Instead of takeout, I immediately thought of all the things I haven’t been getting from the grocery store because we don’t “need” them. I wanted the Talenti gelato I never let myself buy. I was also craving my two favorite items from the Publix bakery: guava pastelitos and black-and-white cookies.

My husband, on the other hand, just wanted to make his favorite comfort meal: tacos. After getting stressed out during the filing process, I think the tacos helped us both re-regulate afterward. We eat tacos almost every week, so it wasn’t out of the norm. But I found it really interesting that after cutting back on eating out this year, we’ve each really grown to prefer our home cooking, so much so that my husband’s own tacos were his reward.

We also had to reframe the task of filing our taxes

No matter what our return was this year, we decided beforehand to put it toward the summer vacation we’re taking anyway. This helped us feel like we’re getting a “free” trip, but it also removes any expectation from our return. Whether it’s great this year or not, looking at it ahead of time as a coupon for our summer vacation removes any disappointment if the return is awful, as well as any guilt about the cost of our trip.

Based on my initial experience, filing taxes with a spouse can really suck the love out of a room. Knowing this was something we’d have to go through each year, I felt that we’d benefit from a survival plan.

Our predetermined reward system helps separate the chore of taxes from our marriage and makes us a more effective team.

I wouldn’t say our system is romantic, but it definitely helps in the big picture of our relationship.

This startup uses AI to get you on a date — fast. Read the pitch deck it used to raise $9.2 million.

Allen Wang and Eric Liu, two UC Berkeley dropouts, think they can help college students find love using AI.

Their dating startup, Ditto, leverages AI to match people based on the data users input into the service. It then plans the date for them.

“We’re bringing people back to in-real-life interactions,” Wang, 23, told Business Insider.

After users make a profile, they directly message Ditto’s AI chatbot via text— no app required — about their type and dating preferences. On Wednesdays, users get a text about a potential match. After each date, Ditto follows up for feedback and uses that information as additional data for future matches.

“People are tired of being trapped behind the apps,” Wang said.

Ditto will announce on Tuesday that it has raised $9.2 million in seed funding, led by venture capital firm Peak XV, with participation from firms like Alumni Ventures, Gradient, and Scribble Ventures.

The seed funding will primarily be spent on hiring talent across AI and growth, Wang said, as well as toward Ditto’s marketing. The company has 10 staffers and has raised a total of $9.5 million to date. Ditto launched its product in early 2025.

Ditto isn’t the only AI dating app gaining momentum right now.

Other startups like Sitch, Known, and Amata have raised millions for similar products that pitch AI-powered matchmaking as the new alternative to swiping through profiles. Dating app mainstays like Tinder and Bumble, meanwhile, are also testing the AI waters to reignite user interest.

Ditto’s AI tries to determine whether two people would be a good match by using profile details, such as users’ hobbies or interests, to simulate a date, Wang said.

“Would you guys have a good conversation? Do you guys have matched humor level? Do you guys have similar vibes and values?” Wang said.

Finding love as a college student

The dating startup world has a history of targeting college students as early users. For instance, Tinder’s early success came in part from its marketing on college campuses.

“College kids are very adaptive to new technology,” Wang said.

The app now has about 42,000 people signed up across several college campuses in California. With its recent funding, Ditto plans to expand to more college campuses.

One tactic that helps get college-aged users on board: parties.

Ditto plans to host several yacht parties across the US, beginning with a Valentine’s Day party in Los Angeles (it hosted its first yacht party this summer). At the parties, 100 college students will sign up for Ditto and then get paired into 50 couples.

For now, Ditto is free.

“We are prioritizing growth over monetization,” Wang said, adding that the startup is interviewing users about what price they’d be willing to pay for dates from the service.

Gen Zers date for financial stability, says Coffee Meets Bagel’s CEO

Adios to casual dating: Young Americans are seeking committed life partners to split bills with.

Quincy Yang, the co-CEO of dating app Coffee Meets Bagel, told Business Insider that money and economics are huge considerations for Gen Z when choosing a partner.

“It’s so hard to afford to buy a house, or any property,” Yang said, adding that a lot of younger people are staying at home with their parents. He said for older generations, it was more affordable to “live the American dream” of buying a home and starting a family.

“Now, you need dual incomes to afford just the median condo or house. You need to have a pretty good job; you can’t slack off too much,” he said.

Yang said the affordability crisis has affected dating. “There’s an incentive now to find a good partner who is financially stable and ambitious.”

Shn Juay, Yang’s co-CEO, said that this is evident in Gen Zers not being as into hookups as older generations.

“When you talk about dating apps, the first thing that comes to mind will be hookups,” she said. “But the Gen Zs are really more conscious about more real things in their life, they’re not into hookups. Unlike the previous generation, what they imagine of an ideal partner is very pragmatic.”

The CEOs said that daters should choose dealbreakers judiciously while finding a partner.

“You can always go for a higher degree, or you get promoted along the way, but not at age 28 years old, where everybody’s probably still really early in their career,” Juay told Business Insider.

Dual incomes are needed to achieve the American dream

Living in the US is more expensive than ever.

Housing costs have been rising faster than incomes over the last two decades, according to a June 2024 report by the US Treasury Department.

Grocery prices are not providing any relief. US food prices rose nearly 25% from 2020 to 2024, according to data from the US Department of Agriculture.

The Trump administration’s imposition of tariffs on foreign goods this year has exacerbated this problem by forcing retailers like Walmart and Target to raise prices.

In this climate, living alone has become an unaffordable luxury for many Americans.

A Pew Research Center study released in January said more US adults are living with a partner. The study analyzed US Census Bureau data and found that the percentage of adults living without a partner decreased from 44% in 2019 to 42% in 2023.

Life costs more, so money is a priority for younger daters

So naturally, finances are a big priority for daters.

In November, the dating app, which has around 20 million users worldwide, conducted a survey of about 1,050 of its users in the US between the ages of 21 and 35. The respondents were working professionals who said they were either actively seeking a relationship or open to one.

The survey revealed that financial stability was a top priority for them, with 54% of the respondents listing it as such. Almost 60% labeled “ambition/drive” as a must-have in a potential partner, even more than having shared interests.

“While many are looking for someone to spend their life with, practical matters still reign supreme,” said Coffee Meets Bagel, which markets its app as “for serious daters.”

SpaceX is planning a secondary share sale, according to an internal message to employees seen by multiple outlets, which would value the company at $800 billion, reclaiming the top spot among the world’s most valuable private companies from OpenAI.

OpenAI executed its own secondary share sale in October, valuing the company at $500 billion.

The letter to employees also says SpaceX is exploring an initial public offering to “raise a significant amount of capital,” The Wall Street Journal and other outlets reported. It would be the largest IPO in history.

“The thinking is that if we execute brilliantly and the markets cooperate, a public offering could raise a significant amount of capital,” SpaceX Chief Financial Officer Bret Johnsen told staff in the December 12 message.

Musk also hinted at an IPO earlier this week.

After journalist Eric Berger published an op-ed arguing that SpaceX is likely to go public soon, Musk replied, “as usual, Eric is accurate.”

The company is aiming to raise more than $25 billion through an initial public offering, a move that could push its valuation above $1 trillion, Reuters reported.
