Why Travis Kalanick believes humans are on the verge of a ‘golden age’

The Uber-famous founder, Travis Kalanick, says a new golden age is coming — and it’s robots that are ushering it in.

Kalanick announced a new venture called Atoms on Friday in a 1,600-word screed in which he said the automation of the physical world is the next phase of the AI era.

“Software has automated tasks of language and math, but the complete automation of the physical world — autonomy — remains largely untouched territory, the principal unlock to the next era of progress and abundance,” he wrote. “History refers to this kind of moment of radical progress as a Golden Age.”

Kalanick said this “golden age” is emerging as production and transportation become driven primarily by computation, minerals, and energy. With autonomous machines building other machines and software constantly improving itself, he said, productivity could reach unprecedented levels.

“The organization of human capital becomes superhuman,” he wrote.

Kalanick later said on the tech talk show TBPN on Friday that Atoms has been operating in stealth mode for the past eight years. Now, the company aims to expand its delivery infrastructure beyond food into industries such as food service, mining, and transportation.

He said in his announcement that the company’s goal is to create “gainfully employed robots.” He defines these as “specialized robots with productive jobs that bring abundance to their owners and society at large.”

He also said humans should be careful about building robots in their own image. “I watched the half-marathon and couldn’t help but think how much better it would be if they just had wheels,” he wrote, referring to a competition in Beijing last year that pitted humanoid robots against each other.

Kalanick cofounded Uber in 2009. He led the company as CEO until 2017, when he stepped down amid reports of a toxic workplace culture and ongoing regulatory battles.

He isn’t the only tech executive who believes AI robots should extend beyond humanoid form.

The cofounder and CEO of World Labs, Fei-Fei Li, said on the No Priors podcast last year that building physical AI in a singular form is energy inefficient.

“Just an extreme and trivial example, if we put robots underwater, they should not be the shape of humans,” she said. “They better be in the shape of fish. Just think about energy efficiency. The same with flying.”

Polymarket-users-have-bet-over-2-million-so-far-predicting.jpeg

Polymarket users have bet over $2 million so far predicting the Golden Globes. Here’s who they say will win.

The awards show ballot was once an innocent watch-party game.

Now, millions of dollars are at stake.

Fans planning to watch the 83rd Golden Globe Awards are plowing money into prediction markets, hoping for a windfall if they correctly choose a winner.

Millions have so far been bet on Golden Globe winners on Polymarket, one of the leading prediction market platforms. This year, Polymarket partnered with the Golden Globes, which airs on CBS and Paramount+ on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET.

“The collaboration will bring real-time, market-driven insights across the Golden Globes live events and a broad digital and editorial ecosystem touching fans’ greatest passion points across entertainment, fashion and pop culture,” a joint press release said.

Prediction markets, such as Polymarket and Kalshi, allow users to buy and sell shares on the outcomes of future events, including sports games or presidential elections, potentially resulting in a payday. Polymarket also provides real-time updates, meaning the data can provide insights into how consumers and investors think.

The relatively new markets are not strictly regulated, leaving room for those with insider knowledge to game the system. A last-minute bet on Polymarket last week that Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro would be ousted netted strong returns after the US captured Maduro in a surprise raid hours later. A new bill proposed last week in response would prohibit government officials from insider trading on prediction markets.

For the Globes, fans have already bet nearly $2.5 million in contracts across 30 awards show categories on Polymarket, including Best Director and Best Motion Picture, as of Sunday afternoon.

So, who do betters think will win?

Predicted Winners on Polymarket

Best Director

On Polymarket, betters think Paul Thomas Anderson, whose film “One Battle After Another” also snagged Golden Globe noms, has a 94% chance of winning Best Director. Ryan Coogler, director of “Sinners,” is behind Anderson at 3%.

Best Actor — Drama winner

Betters gave Wagner Moura, who starred in “The Secret Agent,” a 73% chance of winning Best Actor in a motion picture drama. Michael B. Jordan of “Sinners” had a 24% chance.

Best Actor — Musical or Comedy winner

Timothee Chalamet, star of “Marty Supreme,” led with a 70% chance to win Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy motion picture on Sunday afternoon. Leonardo DiCaprio followed Chalamet at 17% for his work in “One Battle After Another.”

Best Actress — Drama winner

“Hamnet” star Jessie Buckley had a 96% of winning Best Actress in a drama motion picture. Behind Buckley, betters gave Renate Reinsve of “Sentimental Value” a 3% chance of winning.

Best Actress — Musical or Comedy winner

Polymarket betters think Rose Byrne has a 76% chance of winning a Golden Globe Award for her role in the film, “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You.” Emma Stone, star of “Bugonia,” came in second at 12%.

Best Motion Picture — Animated winner

On Polymarket, users gave Netflix’s “KPop Demon Hunters” a 92% chance of winning the top animation prize. “Acro,” written and directed by Ugo Bienvenu, followed at a 5% chance.

Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy winner

Betters on Polymarket threw their money behind “One Battle After Another” to win this category at 97%, beating “Marty Supreme,” which had a 2% chance.

Best Motion Picture — Drama winner

“Sinners” had the highest chance to win Best Motion Picture in the drama category on Polymarket at 55%. “Hamnet” came behind that at a 31% chance.

Vintage photos show Hollywood icons mingling at the Golden Globes

  • The 83rd annual Golden Globes will air on CBS and Paramount+ on Sunday night.
  • Photos taken throughout the event’s long history show Hollywood icons celebrating together.
  • From Marilyn Monroe to Marlon Brando, every big star has been in attendance.

The very first Golden Globes were held on January 20, 1944, to celebrate the films of 1943.

Over the last eight decades, the Golden Globes have evolved to include television, have endured a few scandals, and — after a one-year hiatus in 2022 — are one of the first major events of Hollywood’s awards season.

These photos were taken across the Globes’ 82 years in existence. See how the ceremony has changed.

The Golden Globes were first held in 1944 by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a band of writers who came together in 1943.

The first ceremony was held at the 20th Century Fox lot. It then moved around for two decades until finding its permanent home, the Beverly Hills Hilton, in 1961.

The award ceremony became more glamorous over time.

By the 20th Golden Globes, the stage looked more like the one we see today.

All of Hollywood’s best and brightest attended the awards.

Roland was nominated the following year for his part in “The Bad and the Beautiful.”

Stanwyck wouldn’t receive a Golden Globe nomination until 1966, and she was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award, a lifetime achievement award, in 1986.

The Golden Globes are known as the “fun” awards show because alcohol is famously served at every table.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, over 7,500 glasses of bubbly are normally consumed over the course of the night.

And since the attendees are seated at tables, not in rows, there are more opportunities for mingling.

Marilyn Monroe looked every bit the ’60s starlet at the 1962 awards.

That same year, she won her fourth and final Golden Globe, for world film favorite (female). Previously, Monroe won the best young box office personality in 1951 and the world film favorite (female) in 1953. She died just five months later, in August 1962.

In 2023, Ana de Armas was nominated for best actress in a motion picture (drama) for playing Monroe in “Blonde.”

Another iconic old Hollywood duo seen at the awards was Dean Martin and John Wayne.

One of the most iconic moments in award-show history was when she famously shaded Jack Warner, the man who didn’t cast her in “My Fair Lady.”

When the stage musical “My Fair Lady” was made into a movie, Warner, head of Warner Bros. studios, decided to cast Audrey Hepburn as the lead, even though Andrews had played the role on Broadway and in London.

This snub proved to be a blessing, as it freed up Andrews for what might be her most iconic role of all time: Mary Poppins.

When Andrews won her Golden Globe in 1965, she thanked “the man who made all this possible in the first place, Mr. Jack Warner.”

It’s also a big night for couples. Just ask Mark Hamill and his wife, Marilou York.

Trump says 2 new ‘Trump-class’ ships will be added to ‘Golden Fleet’

  • President Donald Trump announced new “Trump-class” ships for the US Navy Golden Fleet.
  • Trump said up to 25 ships will be built, with construction starting immediately.
  • The first of these ships is the USS Defiant.

President Donald Trump on Monday shared details about new additions to what he’s calling the US Navy’s “Golden Fleet.”

Two “Trump-class” ships, which the president described as “battleships,” were announced Monday afternoon at a press conference alongside Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth, Navy Secretary John Phelan, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Trump said they would be “AI-controlled” and have “lasers,” and he said that the design would be led by the US Navy with his aesthetic input.

The first of these ships will be called the USS Defiant, Phelan said. Posters of the warship were on display at the press conference held at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida.

“We’re desperately in need of ships, and I have approved a plan for the Navy to begin construction of two large battleships,” he said. “We used to build the Iowa, the Missouri, the Alabama. These will be 100 times the force and power. Each one of these will be the largest battleships built in the history of our country.”

The president said that eventually “20 to 25” of the “Trump-class” ships will be made, and construction will start “immediately.”

The ships will be triple the size of an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, according to the US Navy, and they will be capable of launching Conventional Prompt Strike hypersonic missiles and the Surface Launch Cruise Missile-Nuclear.
