Anthropic says its latest AI model is too powerful for public release and that it broke containment during testing

Anthropic said on Tuesday that it has halted the broader release of its newest AI model, Mythos, due to concerns that it is too good at finding “high-severity vulnerabilities” in major operating systems and web browsers.

“Claude Mythos Preview’s large increase in capabilities has led us to decide not to make it generally available,” Anthropic wrote in the preview’s system card. “Instead, we are using it as part of a defensive cybersecurity program with a limited set of partners.”

The announcement is a major step for Anthropic, which in February weakened a safety pledge about how it would develop AI models. Claude Opus 4.6, which the company called its most powerful model to date, was publicly released on February 5.

In its statements about Mythos, Anthropic detailed a number of eyebrow-raising findings and episodes, including that the model could follow instructions that encouraged it to break out of a virtual sandbox.

“The model succeeded, demonstrating a potentially dangerous capability for circumventing our safeguards,” Anthropic recounted in its safety card. “It then went on to take additional, more concerning actions.”

The researcher had encouraged Mythos to find a way to send a message if it could escape. “The researcher found out about this success by receiving an unexpected email from the model while eating a sandwich in a park,” Anthropic wrote.

The model apparently decided that wasn’t enough and found another way to spike the football.

“In a concerning and unasked-for effort to demonstrate its success, it posted details about its exploit to multiple hard-to-find, but technically public-facing, websites,” Anthropic wrote.

Anthropic is withholding some details about the cybersecurity vulnerabilities Mythos found, but it did point out a few. The AI model “found a 27-year-old vulnerability in OpenBSD—which has a reputation as one of the most security-hardened operating systems in the world,” the company wrote.

Mythos was powerful enough that even “non-experts” could seize on its capabilities.

“Engineers at Anthropic with no formal security training have asked Mythos Preview to find remote code execution vulnerabilities overnight, and woken up the following morning to a complete, working exploit,” Anthropic’s Frontier Red Team wrote in a blog post. “In other cases, we’ve had researchers develop scaffolds that allow Mythos Preview to turn vulnerabilities into exploits without any human intervention.”

All told, Anthropic said it decided not to publicly release Mythos. Instead, their hope is to eventually release “Mythos-class models” once proper safeguards are in place.

“Our eventual goal is to enable our users to safely deploy Mythos-class models at scale—for cybersecurity purposes but also for the myriad other benefits that such highly capable models will bring,” the team wrote in the blog. “To do so, that also means we need to make progress in developing cybersecurity (and other) safeguards that detect and block the model’s most dangerous outputs.”

For now, only 11 other select organizations, including Google, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Nvidia, and JPMorgan Chase, will get access to Mythos as part of a cybersecurity group named “Project Glasswing.” Anthropic is providing up to $100 million in Mythos usage credits as part of what it is calling “Project Glasswing.”

The cybersecurity project is named after the glasswing butterfly, a metaphor the company said about how Mythos was able to find vulnerabilities hidden in plain sight and the avoidance of harm by being transparent about the risks.

The news came on a day in which Anthropic’s Claude and Claude Code experienced a “major outage,” the latest sign of growing pains as the AI startup has struggled to keep up with its newfound popularity.

Investors are looking at the January jobs report to see if the job market has continued stabilizing following a difficult 2025. The US added only 584,000 jobs last year, the lowest employment growth since 2003, excluding recessions.

The coming report will include revisions to past job growth, so last year’s employment level could change.

Nancy Guthrie update: Authorities release images of ‘armed individual’ from surveillance footage

Authorities investigating the mysterious disappearance of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy Guthrie, have released surveillance images of a person of interest in the case.

The photos, released to the public by the FBI on Tuesday, shows a masked person captured on the Nest doorbell camera on Nancy Guthrie’s home.

Up until this point, law enforcement officials have not identified any persons of interest or suspects in the case.

Authorities believe 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie was taken from her Arizona home against her will 10 days ago.

The elderly woman, who has limited mobility, a pacemaker, and depends on daily medication for a heart condition, was reported missing by her family on February 1 after she was last seen the night before when they dropped her off at home following a dinner.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has said that Nancy Guthrie’s doorbell camera had been removed and that blood discovered on her porch matched back to her.

The case has captured national attention amid reports of purported ransom notes and emotional video pleas by Savannah Guthrie and her siblings.

On Monday, the famed NBC anchor posted a new Instagram video, telling her nearly two million followers: “We are at an hour of desperation, and we need your help.”

“Law enforcement is working tirelessly around the clock trying to bring her home, trying to find her. She was taken, and we don’t know where,” Savannath Guthrie said as she called the situation a “nightmare.”

The FBI, which is assisting in the case, has offered a reward of up to $50,000 for information related to Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance.

Anthropic and OpenAI release dueling AI models on the same day in an escalating rivalry

The rivalry between OpenAI and Anthropic intensified this week.

The two companies released dueling new AI models on Thursday and had back-to-back podcast appearances on “TBPN.”

On Thursday, Anthropic unveiled Claude Opus 4.6, an upgraded model that the company says would improve performance on office productivity and coding tasks, with an expanded “context window” that allows it to work through longer documents and more complex projects in a single session.

Meanwhile, OpenAI punched back with its own new coding-focused model called GPT-5.3-Codex, which the company says runs faster, uses fewer computing resources, and can generate and manage complex software from English instructions. The new version also comes alongside a stand-alone Codex desktop app.

Both Sam Altman, the OpenAI CEO, and Sholto Douglas, one of Anthropic’s leading researchers, appeared on the “TBPN” podcast in back-to-back chats with show host John Coogan and Jordi Hays.

“I think we will be heading towards a workflow where a lot of people just feel like they’re managing a team of agents,” said Altman. “And as the agents get better, they’ll keep operating at a higher and higher level of abstraction.”

Douglas, who appeared in the subsequent timeslot, told Coogan and Hays that users have been comparing previous Anthropic and OpenAI models, and they have noticed some key differences.

“The OpenAI models were a bit better at trying really, really, really hard on tough problems, but the Anthropic models were much faster and so forth,” Douglas said.

“And so they worked on speed while we worked on making the models much, much better at really, really tough problems,” Douglas added of the Opus 4.6.

The latest release is part of a long-running competition between Anthropic and OpenAI, dating back to 2021, when a group of OpenAI researchers left to form Anthropic, aiming to develop safer and more controlled AI systems.

A big week for Anthropic

This week, Anthropic’s launch of industry-specific plugins triggered a stock market sell-off as Wall Street worried about AI’s impact on software.

Anthropic also took a subtle shot at OpenAI with a series of ads released this week, including one that will air during the Super Bowl.

The ads feature unnamed humanized AIs dropping ads in the middle of their advice, alongside the promise that its model, Claude, will remain ad-free.

OpenAI announced in January that ads are coming to ChatGPT for users of the free version.

Altman subsequently hit back, calling Anthropic “dishonest” and defending ChatGPT as a product that brings AI “to billions of people who can’t pay for subscriptions.” He also clarified that the ads will be “clearly labeled” to differentiate themselves from the chatbot’s answers to queries.

“We are not stupid. We respect our users. We understand that if we did something like what those ads depict, people would rightfully stop using the product,” Altman told the “TBPN” podcast on Thursday.

“Our first principle with ads is that we’re not going to put stuff into the LLM stream,” Altman added. “That would feel crazy dystopic, like a bad sci-fi movie.”

MrBeast’s release strategy for Season 2 of ‘Beast Games’ highlights a key concern creators have with TV

MrBeast is blurring the lines between YouTube and TV in a new way with the release of season two of his reality TV hit, “Beast Games,” on Amazon’s Prime Video.

The superstar YouTuber, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, announced that the first episode will be copyright-free. That’ll enable people to share reaction clips to their heart’s content without fear of repercussions on platforms like Google’s YouTube and Amazon’s Twitch. The show kicks off on Wednesday.

It’s only for one episode, but it gives MrBeast a way to have his TV cake and eat it, too — and for Amazon to juice exposure for the show.

The Amazon deal exposed MrBeast to a new audience and enabled him to create a big-budget spectacle that would have been difficult to make economically viable if it ran on YouTube. However, a potential risk was that MrBeast’s fans might not follow him to Prime Video, which is behind a paywall requiring a Prime membership.

Last year, MrBeast uploaded part of the first season to YouTube to ensure his fans on that platform were aware of it. MrBeast is YouTube’s top creator, with over 450 million subscribers, and regularly receives more than 100 million views and numerous comments on his YouTube videos.

Traditional media companies, such as Netflix and Fox, have been trying to stay relevant with younger viewers by striking deals with YouTube creators. The loss of fan interaction and decreased reach are concerns for some creators, though. In negotiating deals with podcasters, Netflix has told talent agents that it’s exploring how to replicate community features for podcast hosts that it brings onto its platform.

Season 2 of “Beast Games,” which features 100 “strong” and 100 “smart” contestants competing for more than $10 million in prizes, blends elements of TV and digital platforms in other ways.

It’ll include a crossover episode with “Survivor,” the famous reality TV show that “Beast Games” took inspiration from. And Twitch is promoting the season kickoff with a VIP screening on Tuesday featuring streamers alongside MrBeast.

Meta delays release of new mixed reality glasses code-named ‘Phoenix’ in order to ‘get the details right’

Meta is delaying the release of new mixed reality glasses code-named “Phoenix.”

The company planned to release the new device in the second half of 2026, but it is pushing back its timeline to the first half of 2027, Maher Saba, VP of Reality Labs Foundation, wrote in a Thursday memo to employees, which was seen by Business Insider.

In a separate memo, also viewed by Business Insider, metaverse leaders Gabriel Aul and Ryan Cairns said moving the release date back is “going to give us a lot more breathing room to get the details right.”

They added, “There’s a lot coming in hot with tight bring-up schedules and big changes to our core UX, and we won’t compromise on landing a fully polished and reliable experience.”

Meta declined to comment.

The “Phoenix” mixed reality glasses, which were previously reported on by The Information, have a goggle-like form factor and are connected to a puck to help power them, according to two employees who have seen the device and spoke anonymously as they are not authorized to talk to the press.

The two employees said the model looks similar to Apple’s mixed reality glasses Vision Pro. There was some skepticism among leaders about the puck, but they chose to keep it to help keep the glasses lighter and more comfortable, and to prevent it from overheating, they said.

Saba said in the memo that at a recent meeting with CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Reality Labs (RL) leaders received feedback on their plans for 2026, which he said “focused on making the business sustainable and taking extra time to deliver our experiences with higher quality.”

“Based on that, many teams in RL will need to adjust their plans and timelines,” he added. “Extending timelines is not an opportunity for us to add more features or take on additional work.”

Meta also plans to release a new “limited edition” wearable device code-named “Malibu 2” in 2026, according to Saba.

Meta is starting work on its next-generation Quest device, a product that Aul and Cairns wrote will be focused on immersive gaming, and represent a “large upgrade” in capabilities from its existing devices, and “significantly improve unit economics.”

In October, Meta reorganized its metaverse unit and tapped Aul, who led products for Meta Horizon, and Cairns, who was previously in charge of virtual reality hardware, to co-lead its efforts, Business Insider previously reported. The company is now considering budget cuts of up to 30% within its Reality Labs division, which could impact employees working on its virtual spaces platform, Horizon Worlds.

The company has also expanded its AI hardware push by acquiring Limitless, a startup that makes AI-powered pendant devices, the company announced Friday.
